Twisters, the follow-up to the 1996 hit, may have found another lead to star alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones (Where the Crawdads Sing). Top Gun: Maverick actor Glen Powell might join the sequel from Universal and Amblin Entertainment.
Variety reports Powell is in talks to star in Twisters, which is set to release July 19, 2024. Lee Isaac Chung, who helmed Minari and an episode of The Mandalorian, will direct the sequel. The Revenant scribe Mark L. Smith penned the screenplay.
In October, the forecast for fast-tracking a new Twister flick emerged, with reports stating Steven Spielberg pushed to get the sequel made after reading Smith’s script. No plot details have been divulged about the movie yet. So it’s unknown who Edgar-Jones and Powell might play.
The original Twister starred Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt, making almost $500 million at the box office. Set in Oklahoma, the film followed storm-chasers as they tracked down the biggest tornadoes they could find. The cast also included Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jami Gertz, and Cary Elwes.
Powell is probably best known for portraying Hangman in Top Gun: Maverick but also had a main role on the TV series Scream Queens. Variety notes the actor is in demand, with his name attached to Richard Linklater’s Hitman and a buddy comedy with Nick Jonas called Foreign Relations.
